Castletown 1-17 Starlights 1-7

Initially Starlights did a fine job in masking the underlying gulf between the sides, before Castletown, while temporarily down a man, emphasised their current domestic supremacy when turning the screw either side of half-time in Monamolin on Friday to secure their first EBS Mortgages Wexford All-County League Division 1 title since 2024.

Starlights hit a fallow period since defying the same opposition in the 2020 Senior championship decider, culminating in relegation from the top-flight last year.

But they now have their respected 2017 Senior title-winning boss Joe Hagan back at the helm, and his early deeds together with selector Purt Doyle saw the Enniscorthy town men cope more than satisfactorily while facing the first-half wind and their more illustrious opponents – the back-to-back Senior championship winners – to tie on 1-3 to 0-6 after 24 minutes.

While Castletown wing-back Killian Pierce – captain for the night before heading to foreign shores – nudged the maroon and whites back in front, Starlights seemed to be giving themselves every chance, and they gained a supposed boost when Castletown lost emerging attacker Michael Kavanagh to the sin-bin on 27 minutes following a foul on Alan Tobin at midfield.

But Castletown, starting with 11 of last year’s championship winners, immediately took control, shooting 1-3 without reply before Kavanagh returned to establish a decisive margin after 36 minutes (1-10 to 1-3).

While short the Brooks brothers, Darragh and Robbie, together with Liam Coleman owing to county commitments, and also Jack Higgins (in America), Castletown still packed a master of operations in midfielder Rory Heffernan, who pulled all the strings in an outstanding individual performance.

And with the aforementioned Killian Pierce together with Doran Daly-O’Toole, Ross Cody, Gavin McNulty and Brendan Halpin among those right on Heffernan’s coat-tails, it was a largely satisfactory evening for the management of Jimmy Fogarty, Anthony Masterson and Paul Garrigan.

Starlights will be frustrated with their rather limp second-half effort as they failed to register again until the 46th minute, but their composure during the opening period while facing the wind and such an accomplished opposition, plus the promise shown by several members of their 2024 Minor Premier finalists – Ryan Donohoe, John Millar and Jack Leacy in particular – is encouraging for their prospects of negotiating an immediate escape from Intermediate championship ranks.

The Bellefield Road outfit were organised and patient throughout the first-half, keeping their wits about them despite their wind-assisted rivals sweeping three points clear inside eight minutes on top of Daly-O’Toole drawing a smart save from Starlights’ solid ‘keeper Anthony Larkin, while Brendan Halpin struck the crossbar with another goaling effort.

Rory Heffernan drew first blood from the rebound arising from Daly-O’Toole’s goaling bid, while Michael Kavanagh, in his competitive bow at adult level, and Halpin (free) also pointed.

Starlights snapped back in the 11th minute with an exquisite equalising goal from Ryan Donohoe, who gathered a sublime foot-pass from the right wing by recent Wexford FC star Aaron Dobbs before rifling to the far top corner of the net from the right edge of the square (1-0 to 0-3).

Oisín Pepper was unyielding in his contribution from wing-back for Starlights, and he combined with Kevin Foley for Jack Leacy to edge them in front after 13 minutes, before goalie Larkin made it 1-2 to 0-3 from a 15th-minute free forced by ‘Gooch’ Tobin.

Heffernan and defender Pierce levelled after 18 minutes, before Kevin Foley saw his 24th-minute point sandwiched by Castletown scores from Donnacha Holmes and Killian Pierce.

The eventual winners were reduced to 14 men as hope sprung for Starlights but, with Rory Heffernan commanding, Castletown efficiently put their rivals at arm’s length.

Daly-O’Toole was rewarded for his sterling work when making it 0-8 to 1-3 at the break, before centre-back Kennedy tagged on a point 61 seconds after the restart.

And while Gavin McNulty hammered a goaling strike off the crossbar, Castletown kept the hammer down for Daly-O’Toole to force home the rebound in the 34th minute (1-9 to 1-3).

Aaron Dobbs was foiled at the other end immediately afterwards, with Castletown stopper Niall Hempenstall getting down low to smothe his point-blank goaling strike.

Brendan Halpin quickly had Castletown 1-10 to 1-3 clear before they welcomed back Michael Kavanagh.

There was relief for Starlights when Daly-O’Toole squandered a gilt-edged goaling opportunity as he attempted to palm home instead of putting his boot through the ball.

Starlights had ‘keeper Larkin prospecting around midfield for much of the closing quarter in an obvious ploy to put him within two-point scoring range.

But the only orange flag was secured by rival defender Colin Kennedy a minute into added-time from an assist by substitute Niall Kavanagh, with singles from Heffernan, Daly-O’Toole, Halpin (two) and Gavin Kelly having insulated Castletown’s position.

Starlights eventually roused themselves in the closing quarter with scores from Dobbs (free), Larkin (free) and the Peppers, Oisín and substitute Darragh, before the Nicky O’Toole Memorial Cup was added to the silverware collection of an outfit looking destined for a championship three-peat.
